How to Prepare Your Site for Sauna Delivery: Building the Right Sauna Foundation

Ordering a custom sauna is exciting. You’ve chosen the style, selected your heater, and started imagining relaxing evenings surrounded by warmth and quiet. Before your sauna arrives, though, there’s one important step that sets the stage for years of enjoyment: preparing the site.

A strong sauna foundation helps ensure your sauna stays level, performs efficiently, and stands up to years of changing weather. Fortunately, preparing your site is usually much simpler than many homeowners expect.

With a little planning ahead, your sauna delivery day can be smooth and stress-free.

Why Your Sauna Foundation Matters

Every custom sauna is built to last, but even the best craftsmanship depends on a stable base.

Over time, uneven ground or poor drainage can cause settling, which may affect doors, windows, and the overall performance of the structure. A properly prepared sauna foundation provides solid support while helping protect your investment from unnecessary wear.

Just as importantly, good site preparation helps water drain away from the sauna rather than collecting underneath it. Keeping moisture away from the base contributes to the long-term durability of the entire structure.

The Best Foundation for Most Outdoor Saunas

For the majority of installations, we recommend a 4-6 inch compacted gravel pad.

This type of sauna foundation offers several advantages:

  • Creates a stable, level surface
  • Promotes excellent drainage
  • Helps prevent settling over time
  • Reduces moisture around the base of the sauna
  • Is cost-effective and relatively easy to install

Not just any gravel will do, however. We recommend using Class V gravel or an equivalent material that compacts well and creates a firm, durable base.

Before the gravel is installed, all topsoil and organic material should be removed. Organic matter naturally decomposes over time, which can lead to shifting and settling beneath the sauna.

Once the gravel is compacted, you’ll have a reliable foundation ready for delivery.

Is a Concrete Pad a Good Option?

Absolutely. If you already have a concrete patio or slab with enough room for your sauna, it can make an excellent sauna foundation.

Concrete provides exceptional stability and requires very little maintenance. Many homeowners choose this option when incorporating their sauna into a larger outdoor living area that may include patios, seating areas, or fire pits.

Whether you choose gravel or concrete, the most important factors are that the surface is:

  • Level
  • Stable
  • Well-drained
  • Sized appropriately for your sauna

Choosing the Best Location

As you prepare for outdoor sauna installation, spend some time thinking about where your sauna will fit naturally into your daily routine.

Ask yourself a few simple questions:

  • Is it easy to access year-round?
  • Will snow removal be manageable in the winter?
  • Would you prefer privacy or a scenic view?
  • Is it close enough to the house to encourage frequent use?
  • Is there enough room around the sauna for doors to open comfortably?

Many people discover that the most convenient location becomes the one they use most often. If you enjoy cooling off between sauna sessions, you may also want to consider nearby seating, a cold plunge, or simply an open area where you can step outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Planning for Utilities

Depending on your heater choice, you may also need to prepare for utilities before your sauna arrives.

If you’ve selected an electric heater, your electrician can help ensure the proper electrical service is available before installation.

If you’ve chosen a wood-fired stove, think about where you’ll store firewood and allow enough space around the stove for safe operation.

Propane heaters require planning for propane supply and tank placement, making them an excellent option for remote locations where electricity isn’t available.

Thinking through these details ahead of time makes installation much easier once delivery day arrives.

Make Sure Delivery Is Easy

One detail that’s easy to overlook is access to the installation site.

Before sauna delivery, consider the path your sauna will take from the truck to its final location.

Questions to ask include:

  • Is the driveway accessible?
  • Are there gates or fences that may limit access?
  • Are there low tree branches that need trimming?
  • Are there steep slopes or tight corners?
  • Will specialized equipment be needed?

At Stoke Sauna, we offer free delivery within 50 miles of Delano, Minnesota, directly to your driveway. If your sauna needs to be positioned beyond that point, we can often help using specialized equipment like a shed mule or crane, depending on your site.

If you’re unsure about access, we’re happy to discuss your property before delivery day and recommend the best approach.

A Little Planning Goes a Long Way

Preparing your site doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In most cases, the process comes down to a few key steps:

  1. Choose a location you’ll enjoy using year-round.
  2. Install a stable sauna foundation, whether that’s a compacted gravel pad or existing concrete slab.
  3. Plan for utilities if needed.
  4. Make sure delivery equipment can safely access the site.

Once those pieces are in place, you’re ready for one of the most enjoyable parts of the process, seeing your custom sauna arrive.
